Rings: Olympic-inspired art

The ‘Rings’ exhibition takes its inspiration from the Olympic rings, and will showcase artworks created by pupils in Hampshire schools.

" "

The centrepiece will be textile rings, using only the five colours of the Olympic rings (blue, yellow, black, green and red). Schools are finding creative ways to incorporate the core Olympic values in their rings: Friendship, inspiration, excellence, respect, courage, equality and determination.

As well as the Rings installation, schools have been invited to create poster-size artworks and concertina sketchbooks for display around the Great Hall.

Where and when to see the art

Hanging the rings high up in The Great Hall and The Discovery Centre will provide a dramatic backdrop for other Olympic celebrations and events, as well as an exhibition for the public.

The artworks will be displayed at

  • Winchester Discovery Centre - 28 May to August
  • The Great Hall, Winchester - 2 July to early August
  • Other venues in the county - later in 2012-13 (dates tbc)

How the art is being created

Workshops with leading artist Francoise Dupre provided ideas and techniques which have been passed on to school communities. Young people are now working hard on impressive and exciting pieces of French knitting, wrapping, crochet and many other techniques.

The poster size work and sketchbooks will reflect Olympic values and use the Olympic colours, but pupils can respond to their own choice of artist or art movement. These works will be mounted on display boards kindly loaned by the Mouth and Foot artists.
