Changing the way we deliver adult social care

Nationally the need for change has been partly driven by demographics. England has an ageing population and many more people are living longer, often with more complex needs. Advances in medical care have also led to increasing numbers of people born with disabilities who now need care well into adulthood. Together these factors have put our adult social care services under exceptional pressure.


  • Fact: For the first time there are more pensioners than children in the UK.

  • Fact: It currently costs between £25,000 and £30,000 a year to support one person in a care home. The Saga group forecast that the figure will double within the next 20 years due to these costs rising faster than inflation.

  • Fact: In 20 years time it is estimated that 2 million more people will need help with washing, shopping and eating.
