Commission of Inquiry into the future services for adults in need of support and care

Hampshire is leading the way in transforming adult social care

Hampshire County Council’s expert Commission of Inquiry is calling for the perceived unfairness and complexity of the care and support system for older and disabled people to be tackled. The report by Hampshire’s expert Commission of Inquiry into Personalisation ‘Getting Personal: a fair deal for better care and support’ was launched at the end of November 2008.

The Commission looked at the impact of adult social care on people who use care services, carers, communities, care providers, local authorities, organisations such as health, and the wider public. The report from the Commission has received national acclaim and is set to inform and influence the Government’s forthcoming Green Paper and legislation on the future of adult social care.

A new model for adult social care services in Hampshire is proposed and work is already starting to make these developments in social care a reality. Personalisation is a new vision for the future of social care, the guiding principles which underpin how social care works, with the emphasis on the individual’s dignity, right to self-determination, choice, control and power over the support services they receive.

The system for providing social care for adults is at the beginning of a transformation that will equip it to meet the social care needs of the future. This means looking at the entire picture of people and organisations involved in social care, including people who use care services, carers communities, care providers, local authorities, partner organisation such as health, and the wider public.
