Carers and family support

Shared Lives Carer application and assessment

The following information is designed to guide you through the application and assessment process to become a Shared Lives carer.

A Shared Lives Manager will take you through this process. The worker will spend time with you explaining the process and will give you information about what it is like to work as a Shared Lives carer. They will also provide a safe and objective approach which will enable you to share personal information and recognise and develop your knowledge and skills.

The assessment process explores your motivation for becoming a Shared Lives carer and the things you can offer a service user. The assessment also considers your knowledge and skills and gives you the opportunity to learn and develop these as you work through the process. The scheme will also carry out checks and take up references needed to ensure safe support to service users.

This process also helps the Shared Lives Manager to learn about you and your family so that they can better match a suitable person to you.
