Practical driving advice

If you are less confident about driving, Hampshire County Council’s Road Safety Team offers an independent, confidential, driving assessment for older drivers which helps to prolong fitness to drive. The assessment is not a test but offers help and advice for those aged over 55 who wish to update their driving skills.

Help for disabled drivers

  • Motability Scheme - If you receive the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance or War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement it is possible to use it to buy or lease a car that has been specially adapted for your use, a powered wheelchair or scooter through the Motability Scheme.
If you do not qualify for this scheme you can make your own arrangemrts to have a car adapted by contacting a local car dealer who does motability work.

  • Wessex Drive Ability in Southampton is the nearest Mobility Centre to Hampshire. Disabled drivers can get practical advice about driving, an assessment of their capabilities, and advice about car adaptations and/or choice of car from the Forum of Mobility Centres. They offer professional advice and assessments to individuals who are recovering from an accident or injury or have a medical condition which may affect their ability to drive or access a motor vehicle.
