e-Learning
The course, developed by Hampshire DAAT, will enable people working with children/young people, parents and carers to increase their knowledge and awareness of substance use and related issues. The e-learning course comprises of three modules allowing people to undertake study at their own pace.
There are three separate modules, Each module has its own learning outcomes and collectively support individuals to explore attitudes and values, develop knowledge, increase awareness and identify and meet needs
- Module 1: Knowledge of substances - how they are used and their effects

- Module 3: Identifying substance related needs
Module 1: Knowledge of substances - how they are used and their effects
Learning Aims
To increase knowledge of different substances, how they are used and their effects
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module participants will have;
- identified a range of different substances, the forms they are taken in, their names and prices
- identified the main action and effects of depressants, stimulants, drugs that reduce pain and hallucinogenic substances
- described different ways of using substances and the equipment required
- discussed why young people may choose a specific route of use
- explored attitudes and values in relation to substances
Module 2: Substances and the law
Learning Aims
To increase knowledge of the law in relation to both legal and illegal substances, and raise the importance of educating young people, their parents and carers about the law
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module participants will have:
- explored views and attitudes about substances and their usage
- identified the range of circumstances where people can break the law in relation to substance use
- clarified the classification of different substances within the Misuse of Drugs Act and sentencing
- identified staff legal obligations in law and linked to policy and practice
Module 3: Identifying substance related needs
Learning Aims
To increase knowledge and understanding of the terminology related to substance use, types of use, identifying risks and screening
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module participants will have:
- read national definitions related to substance use and explored how to explain these terms in a child/young person centred way
- described different types of substance use and associated problems
- identified different problems associated with substance use
- increased knowledge of the process of identifying substance related needs and referral criteria to services to meet unmet needs
Treatment Outcomes Profile (TOP)
TOP is a new drug treatment outcome monitoring tool that has been developed by the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTA) in partnership with drug treatment providers.
The TOP is a simple set of questions that will improve clinical practice by enhancing assessment and care plan reviews for clients. It should be completed at the start of each client’s treatment journey to record a baseline of behaviour in the month leading up to starting a new treatment journey.
- Information regarding use of TOP and effectiveness of treatment is provided by the NTA
Identification of young people's substance related needs
The following guidance has been developed by Hampshire DAAT to support all children and young people’s generic, primary care and early intervention youth orientated services in the statutory and voluntary sector to;
- provide good practice guidance in the identification of substance related needs of children and young people in contact with universal and early intervention young people’s services using formal or informal methods
- assist staff in completing young people’s assessment tools by ensuring key areas are addressed on substance use and misuse screening in line with national guidance and good practice
- assist staff completing the Common Assessment Framework (CAF) forms to address substance use and misuse use within the assessment process
