Book on the work of the EMLD
Counting Them In: isolated bilingual learners in schools” edited by Liz Statham, published by Trentham Books Ltd
How the ethnicity agenda of Valuing People is being addressed in Hampshire, is being described in a chapter of this book.
Chapter 6, “Valuing People: Reaching isolated ethnic minority people with learning disabilities and their family” is written by Dominique Rawlings who has developed the EMLD project for Hampshire since 2005.
While building on other chapters in the book, it moves away from a strictly school context to consider not only the pupil but rather the child, young person or adult, with learning disabilities and describes the issues they and their families face when they live in areas of relatively small ethnic minority visible presence. It also discusses how services may successfully engage with them.
