Registering as disabled
If you are disabled you can ask for an assessment to decide whether you can be registered as disabled with Adult Services. To be registered as disabled you need to have a permanent and substantial disability.
There are various categories of registration: for more information see below
- physically impaired
- learning disabilities
- mental health problems
- blind/severely sight impaired
- partially sighted
- deaf
- hard of hearing
Registration is voluntary and entitles you to some concessions from other organisations, particularly for leisure activities and travel.
You do not have to be registered as disabled to be eligible for services from Adult Services.
Registration does not automatically mean that you will qualify for services from Adult Services.
Registration is for a period of five years only unless you are blind or partially sighted. If you wish to maintain your registration beyond five years, please contact us again. Your expiry date will be on your card.
Sight loss registration
If your sight loss is likely to be permanent, it will make it easier to get help, advice and some concessions if you register as blind/severely sight impaired or partially sighted/sight impaired.
Nine out of ten people registered as severely sight impaired still have some sight, so don't think you have to have no sight at all to be able to register.
The only person who can decide whether you qualify for registration is a Consultant Ophthalmologist. Once the Consultant Ophthalmologist has decided that you are registerable, they send a certificate to Adult Services and we complete that registration.
