These barracks were built to house two brigades of artillery and two battalions of infantry. They were first occupied in the early months of 1903.

With the advent of air warfare and anti-aircraft operations in the First World War 1914 - 1918, Frith Barracks were built to house an anti-aircraft brigade of three batteries Royal Artillery, a Searchlight Battalion Royal Engineers, and a Royal Signals Company.

Alma and Dettingen Barracks were rebuilt in the 1930s and have recently been demolished for private housing.
