Hampshire Archives Trust

Hampshire Archives Trust is a unique organisation, working with the owners of archives to protect Hampshire’s archive heritage.

By joining the Trust you can help support this work and discover for yourself more about that heritage.

Based at Hampshire Record Office, the Trust supports the work of Hampshire’s archives services by rescuing archives at risk, by surveying and advising on the care of archives held by organisations, groups and individuals, and by increasing awareness of the importance and interest of archives.

Our members benefit from a programme of visits to other archives and to historic venues in Hampshire and beyond; some sites visited are not normally open to the public. They also receive a twice-yearly newsletter and an annual report – and the satisfaction of knowing that their membership is helping to preserve Hampshire’s archives.

The larger and wider the membership, the more effectively we can speak out on matters affecting the archive heritage.

For further information please contact the Archivist to the Trust or Membership Secretary.

Hampshire Archives Trust gives advice to private owners and custodians of archives on the care of their documents. We also undertake surveys of archive collections held by individuals, businesses, specialist museums and others, to build up a more complete picture of Hampshire's archives.

Organisations we have advised include local history societies, independent museums - such as the Jane Austen Museum at Chawton and the Gilbert White Museum at Selborne - and schools, including Winchester College, where our advice underpinned a fund-raising campaign to improve the College archives' access and preservation and led to the appointment of a professional archivist. In recent years, partnership working resulted in the repatriation of an extensive collection from the USA.

Hampshire Archives Trust can act quickly when the future of an archive collection is in doubt. Archives are particularly at risk when an owner dies or when an organisation relocates, is taken over, or closes down.

Archives stored in an attic, awaiting rescue!

Archives in private hands can face many risks: fire, flood, pest, neglect. They are often stored in attics, basements or garages where they can moulder away unnoticed. Their long-term preservation can only really be assured if they are held in specialist storage such as that provided by record offices.

We have been instrumental in the transfer of major archive collections to Hampshire Record Office, including the records of Knowle Hospital, near Fareham and Park Prewett Hospital, Basingstoke; family and estate archives; the Naval Ordnance archives from Priddys Hard, Gosport; and many businesses such as The Automobile Association, the bank-note maker Portals and the brewer Whitbreads.
