Hampshire Archives and Local Studies

Preservation advice

One of the aims of the Living Links project is to help community groups preserve documents and records for future generations. These include: papers, parchment documents, photographs, maps, volumes, books, film, and videos.

Much of this can be achieved through several simple and cheap methods such as:

  • Use clean hands
  • Store in a cool dry place
  • Avoid light and dust exposure
  • Use a pencil (not pens) for notes as pens can mark documents for ever
  • Keep food and drink away from documents

For a more detailed list of “Dos and Don’ts” please see Care of Collections and Looking After Archives.

Hampshire Archives and Local Studies at Hampshire Record Office has a conservation programme which repairs and restores fragile documents. It also houses a large collection of archives within secure environmentally-controlled strong rooms.

If you are a community group and you need advice regarding the collections within your care please do not hesitate to contact the Living Links project officer.
