Winchester (West Hill) was established in 1840 by a private company but most cemeteries were set up after the 1853 Burial Act by local authorities. Records are usually held by local councils but we hold microfiche copies of many cemetery registers.

Monumental inscriptions of gravestones and plaques in churchyards and cemeteries may also include grave locations and are often indexed. We hold many of these as printed lists in our search room and they include some for Portsmouth and Southampton cemeteries.
Plans of burial grounds
Parish registers occasionally give grave plot numbers; cemetery registers usually do. We hold a few plans of churchyards and cemeteries showing grave positions. Plans are also sometimes included in monumental inscriptions lists.
