Drawing on the perspective of both people who commit crimes and people who are victims of crime, this commission will examine crime from an experiential point of view of both offenders and victims, with a particular focus on political and popular discourse.
The outcome of this collaboration is two interview-based experimental films.
True Crime draws on Dr Bretherick’s extensive experience and contacts including victims, academics, law enforcement personnel and prisoners and also involving the students of the University of Portsmouth in the recording process, with the support of the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries. We hear Dr. Bretherick discuss the social constructs of good and evil against a set of captured portraits of offenders. The film asks questions about the boundaries between individuals, society and how we as a culture behave.
Skin Colored Chairs features the writer Simon Bennett. Simon discusses his experiences of crime in childhood and early adult life with candor, humor and great insight. Using time-lapse, double exposures and other in camera techniques, he creates the visual material for this experimental film.
Film screenings will be shown at The Omega Centre, Portsmouth during the exhibition dates.
To complement Jordan Baseman's artSOUTH commission at Omega Centre, Aspex will be screening a series of feature films and documentaries, selected by the artist and his collaborators, which have inspired and relate to themes in Baseman's work. Screenings will be throughout the exhibition period 7 September – 1 December 2013.
