  • Collaborator(s):Mike Elliott, Ex ‘Rocket Man’ from The New Battery rocket testing site
  • Location(s):The New Battery, National Trust, The Needles, Isle of Wight
  • Lead partner:Aspex Gallery, supported by Quay Arts
  • Exhibition Dates: Free entry 7 September – 3 November 2013, Tuesday – Sunday 11am – 4pm. The New Battery site is closed on Mondays. After this date the work will viewed via a live web stream until the end of the exhibition on 1 December 2013.
  • Tom Hall, Senior Lecturer at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth, has exhibited across the UK and Ireland including 2011 Bournemouth Arts By The Sea Festival, Trinity Buoy Wharf, London and was previously Educational Artist in Residence at The National Gallery, London.

Hall is collaborating with Mike Elliott, ex-employee of the old rocket testing facility which housed the British Space Programme through the 50’s and 60’s at High Down on the Isle of Wight. It is now owned and maintained by the National Trust. Making reference to the Doomsday Clock, a room at the site will be faithfully reconstructed in cardboard, as though it was abandoned in a hurry.

Access to the exhibition at the New Battery site is free, however please note access to the Old Battery site is subject to normal National Trust charges.

Quay Arts are also hosting an additional exhibition, Chasing Sputnik, in association with artSOUTH featuring Tom Hall, working with other artists, to develop new work in relation to the test site. It will be a playful response taking the optimism of early national space ambitions and re-igniting our childhood dreams of interstellar travel and the idea of one day going to the stars.

  • The New Battery Site is now closed for winter, but you can watch a film clip of Tom’s installation.
