Jeremy Millar, a highly respected UK artist and curator, and tutor at the Royal College of Art has exhibited widely in numerous solo and group shows both nationally and internationally.

This project will be a collaboration between the artist and Father Nicholas Spencer, the head of the bindery and Oblate Master at Quarr Abbey, Isle of Wight. The artist will explore the often quietened history of place, and in particular its relationship to both retreat and exile, by filming Father Nicholas binding a first edition copy of Joris-Karl Huysmans’ 1903 novel, L’Oblat; this book was set in the Benedictine Order at Solesmes, from where the monks were exiled to the Isle of Wight in the early twentieth century.  This binding will be designed by Father Nicholas and Millar, and the production process will be documented in a film to be made by Millar while staying at the monastery.

The work of the monks at Quarr Abbey is carried out in an atmosphere marked by prayer and dedication which is reflected by Millar’s practice as a film-maker, which is itself a contemplative one, based upon quiet reflection and observation.

The film and book will be displayed at Southampton City Art Gallery.
