artSOUTH Schools Project

Alongside its public programme, artSOUTH is delivering a series of projects with local schools. With investment from Artswork, the south-east Bridge organisation, and led by artSOUTH partner John Hansard Gallery, these projects incorporate creative ways of engaging schools in the Arts Award, promoting the Artsmark and building educational links with artSOUTH partner organisations.

artswork

At the heart of these projects is the aim to engage children and young people with the artSOUTH programme, its artists and the commissions. The John Hansard Gallery education space will be hosting a celebratory showcase exhibition of work from the Artswork/artSOUTH programme from 26 November 2013 – 18 January 2014. Please check The John Hansard Gallery for Christmas Closure.

artSOUTH and young people

Three groups of young people aged 10-17 from South Hampshire and the Isle of Wight were invited to make their own creative responses to the artSOUTH artworks. Hitting the road, for 12 exhibition visits over six days, in September and October were members of Southampton Youth Offending Service, Denmead Youth Theatre (Theatre Royal Winchester) and Young Quay (Quay Arts, Isle of Wight). The young people visited galleries and off-site locations in Portsmouth, Southampton, and on the Isle of Wight.
The fun-packed artist-led trips inspired them to make their own artwork, performance or written response to be documented online, at the galleries, and in the artSOUTH conference.
