Walking and cycling the towpath

The Basingstoke Canal offers 32 miles of pleasant walking, jogging or cycling alongside one of the most beautiful canals in Britain. At the junction with the River Wey Navigation, you could continue north to Weybridge or south to Guildford alongside the River Wey.

We hope you will enjoy exploring the canal but we do ask that you follow the 'share the space, drop your pace’ ® code which promotes considerate sharing of the towpath by all users.

® Canal & River Trust

The six point code for the towpath is as follows:

  • Pedestrians have priority

  • Be courteousto others; be careful and slow down

  • Keep dogs under control and clean up after them

  • Cyclists and runners give way to pedestrians

  • All cyclists to dismount and give way at bridges

  • Pay attention and don't block the towpath

The towpath is ideal for family walks, runs, rides and picnics, but please remember that the water is cold and deep, so stay away from the edge.

These stations are all fairly near to the canal so you could plan a return journey by train.

  • Hook, Winchfield, Fleet, Aldershot, Ash, Ash Vale, North Camp, Brookwood, Woking and West Byfleet.

  • Weybridge and Guildford which serve the River Wey.
