Vascular plants

The vascular plants include: ferns and their relatives, pines and their relatives, and flowering plants. These are all mounted on herbarium paper and housed in purpose-built herbarium cabinets. As the plants have been pressed, they are unsuitable for display and are used for reference purposes.

The vascular plant collection contains about 21,000 specimens, with over 12,000 collected from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Collectors include A W Westrup, R P Bowman, D E Allen, N E G Cruttwell and W A Bromfield.

Lichens

Over 4,100 specimens representing 688 species. About one third were collected in the New Forest, Hampshire by Francis Rose, Simon Davey, and others, 1970s-1980s. The remainder were collected from around Hampshire and other counties, especially from parts of Scotland. Collectors include Francis Rose, E C Wallace, B J Coppins and others.

Mosses

Approximately 1200 specimens representing 146 genera. About 300 were collected in Hampshire, the remainder from other counties in the UK. Collectors include Francis Rose, E C Wallace, N E G Cruttwell and others, 1940s - 1980s.

Liverwort

Approximately 390 specimens representing 69 genera. About 150 were collected in Hampshire, the remainder from other counties in the UK. Collectors include Francis Rose, E C Wallace, Simon Davey and others, 1940s - 1980s.

Algae

The algae are under represented in our collections. Most were collected in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight by Simon Davey in the 1970's, others are stored in albums and date from the 19th century.

Fungi

Approximately 2,000 boxes of freeze dried fungi with full data, representing 182 genera. Most were collected in Hampshire, by Simon Moore, Conservator of Natural Sciences, 1990's to date.
