Climbing

Calshot’s facilities rate amongst the biggest and best in the Country, with over 1200 sq metres of climbing and over 80 rope lines. We have a wide range of routes from easy angled lower walls, for a gentle introduction, through to our massive overhangs and roofs, giving routes over 14m in length, guaranteed to test the best.

For beginners of all ages we run a variety of courses from taster sessions, through to becoming an independent climber able to attend our recreational sessions. Extend your skills further with our Lead climbing, and Technique and Movement courses or why not venture outdoors via our “Real Rock” programme.

Climbing Taster Sessions

For adults and over 12 years (12-15 years old must be accompanied by an adult on the course). Please see our Young Climbers courses for children under 12 and for courses for young climbers only.

This fun, short session is for those who wish to have a go to see what the sport is all about. You will get a chance to scale our roped walls, belay - hold the ropes for other course members and have a try on our bouldering wall - a short wall with mats underneath, climbed without ropes. All under the expert tuition of one of our experienced instructors. All specialist equipment provided.

By far our most popular climbing course and an excellent way to learn the basics of this exciting sport. Our experienced instructors will give you instruction on general climbing safety, belaying your climbing partner, knots, rope work and safe use of climbing equipment, together with lots of practical climbing enabling you to become a competent top rope climber.

Having completed this course, most participants age 16 plus should be able to pass the assessment required to use the wall during the recreational sessions or you could Under 16’s will be able to climb with their parents at family climbing sessions on Saturday nights and/or join the level 2 NICAS course in our Limpets climbing club.

One years membership of the wall is included for adult participants (normal entry fees apply). All specialist equipment provided.

Course for young climbers

Climbing Rock Hoppers Introductory Course

4 - 7 year olds
Time: 9.30am- 1030 (Sat) or 2pm- 3pm (Fri)

A great introduction to climbing. The session will be a mixture of bouldering and traversing on the low walls combined with one roped climb belayed by the instructor. These one hour sessions work on a 1:6 instructor ratio to ensure plenty of climbing.

Climbing Barnacles Introductory Course (One Day)

Time:9am-4.30pm (lunch included)

Each course will give the participants a chance to do plenty of climbing as well as learn the basics of how to belay (hold the rope) for each other. During the course participants will progress from the 'easy' 6m high novice walls to our larger and more challenging walls. They will have the opportunity to play a variety of climbing games and have a go on our bouldering wall. They will also be taught the important safety procedures needed to make climbing a safe and enjoyable sport.

These clinics provide coaching in small groups to improve one aspect of your climbing. Each month will concentrate on a different climbing technique. Your coach will analyze your current climbing skills and give you top tips and exercises which will help you to improve your climbing

This course covers the basic skills needed by climbers wishing to move from top roping to leading indoors. Subjects covered include clipping the rope, lead belaying, equipment and climbing technique.

Specialist courses and private tuition

We are able to offer a wide range of climbing tuition as specialist courses or private tuition, either at the climbing wall or on real rock. These courses are tailor made to your requirements and group size and can cover any aspect of climbing, from improvised rescue to multi pitch techniques.

Rock out

On real rock

BMC Rock out discounts. We are able to offer discounted places for 14-25 year olds on the Touching Stone and Moving Outside courses.  This discount subsidised by Sport England and the BMC gives a £20 discount off "Touching Stone" and £50 when "Touching Stone" and "Moving Outside" courses are booked together.

An Introduction to Real Rock.
These are ideal for total beginners and indoor wall climbers your opportunity to have your first go at climbing on real rock at Portland. Following a similar format to the climbing wall courses, climbing will be on top ropes set up by your instructor. Instruction, minibus transport from Calshot and specialist equipment included.

You will need a packed lunch and drinks for this trip.

Moving Outside

For Adults (age 16 & over) only

Independent climbing on Real Rock.
This course is for experienced indoor climbers looking to start climbing on real rock by themselves. We will teach you the safety skills needed to move outside on to real rock climbs.  Topics covered include route finding, setting up top ropes, sport climbing, placing traditional protection, setting up belays.

Instruction, minibus transport from Calshot and specialist equipment included.

Junior Real Rock Day Trips

We run real rock day trips to various locations for 7- 18 year olds most school holidays.  These are suitable for any one as no prior climbing experience is required. Tuition, equipment and transport from Calshot are all included. Discounted rates are available for members of our Barnacles & limpets clubs.

Day Trips (Wednesdays). A packed lunch & drinks will be needed for these trips.

£65 (£55 for members of Calshot Climbing Clubs, for discount to apply the young person must be a member of either the limpets or Barnacles climbing clubs at the time of booking and when the trip takes place)  Not sure how the booking system works to best allow customers to select this discount.

Junior Peak District Climbing Trip

An exciting and challenging  three day camping & climbing  trip to the Peak District.  Open to all climbers who have completed their level two NICAS award or are at an equivalent standard (contact the centre if you are unsure) minimum age 10.  We drive up on the Tuesday afternoon and set up camp. The climbing will be at a variety of venues in the Peak District or walls in Manchester or Sheffield if it rains.  Returning on the Friday evening after the days climbing. Evening activities normally include a barbeque and a trip to a bowling ally and/or pizza restaurant.

The climbing available will be aimed at all levels of climber holding NICAS level 2 or higher we are likely to include:

  • Top rope climbing for participants on their first experience of real rock

  • Seconding - following an instructor up a climb they have just lead removing their protection as they climb.  All trip members should have a chance to do this if they wish at some stage

  • Leading climbs on placed protection - those of you who are already leading on the bolted climbs indoors will get the chance to learn how to lead climbs placing your own protection on the ‘traditional’ climbs of the peak district.

  • Bouldering we will take the portable bouldering mats with us and you can attempt some of the many bouldering problems available on the boulders at the base of the crags
