- The extensive climbing walls at Calshot make it one of the biggest and best walls for climbers in the country.
- We have in the region of 250 routes on over 80 rope lines ranging from 6m to 14m in height. We normally have routes set from F2 to F8a. We also have a large bouldering and traversing area.
- The walls are open to competent climbers able to demonstrate safe belaying techniques.
- Equipment hire available.
We have over 80 rope lines of which over half are top ropes, with the remainder set as lead climbs. We average 3 set routes per rope which, along with the features-only and rainbow climbs, provide over 300 routes to chose from.
The walls range from easy angle slabs up to walls overhanging over 6metres, with heights ranging from 6metres to 14 metres. Our main featured bouldering wall is complimented with 2 traversing walls and a campus board.
We have two Auto belays if you want to climb routes without a partner.
We set new routes on a regular basis and maintain our walls and equipment to the highest standards.
We are members of the Association of British Climbing Walls and adhere to their guidelines for the maintenance and operation of the wall.
We have full changing & showering facilities available.
Due to the nature and size of the building the wall is in, it is impossible to control the temperature. It can therefore get cold in winter and warm in summer.
In winter we recommend you bring a warm jacket to wear when belaying between climbs.

Bouldering-only membership of the climbing wall is for any climber who purely wishes to use the bouldering walls and not climb or belay on the roped walls. If you wish to climb or belay on the roped walls you must either be signed in as a guest of a full member, or become a Full or Individual member of the wall yourself.
Bouldering only membership is open to any one of 18 and over who has climbed or bouldered before. It is not available to complete novices who should book on one of our Beginners' climbing courses.
To become a member
The completed form should be presented to the reception on arrival at the wall, no need to book just turn up, with payment for the annual membership fee and members entrance fee. (See box on right above for fees & opening times)
You will then be asked to answer a couple of questions regarding the conditions of use, rules and undertake a short (5mins) induction. Providing you answer the questions satisfactorily you will then be given a bouldering-only membership. This allows you to come and climb on the bouldering wall any time the wall is open.
Full members can sign in up to 2 guests in any climbing session. The guests can be under 18’s, novice climbers or experienced climbers. The full member takes full responsibility for ensuring the safety, behaviour and instruction of their guests at all times. They should ensure that if their guests are belaying that they are appropriately supervised, we do not recommend that the member climbs belayed by an unsupervised novice belayer.
To sign in a guest the member & guest(s) should read and complete the relevant sections of the Guest signing-in form Where the guest(s) are 16 or over they should also be made aware of the conditions of use & rules The competed form should be presented to the reception on arrival at the wall, with payment for the entrance fees. (See box on right above for fees & opening times) NB If the guest is under 18 but the member signing them in is not their parent or legal guardian then they must make sure that their parent or legal guardian has given permission for them to climb and has been fully made aware of the dangers involved. It is recommended they are shown the conditions of use & rules and the relevant sections of the Guest signing in form
Individual members cannot sign in guests except for family members during our family climbing sessions If you are unsure if you have a full or individual membership as at reception on your next visit or ring the centre on 023 8089 2077 to confirm.
Competent climbers who are 18 or over and can satisfactorily demonstrate the basic skills needed to climb safely:
- Putting on a harness
- Tying in to the rope using a recognised climbing knot
- Belaying another climber up and lowering them down safely
The completed form should be presented to the reception on arrival at the wall, no need to book just turn up, with payment of the visitors entrance fee. (See box on right above for fees & opening times)
You will then be asked to demonstrate the above skills and asked a couple of questions regarding the conditions of use, rules and supervising novice climbers.
We are looking for you to demonstrate the necessary skills safely using current best practice. Providing you do this satisfactorily you will then be able to climb for the rest of the session.
NB Visitors cannot sign in guests and will need to redo the assessment on each visit to the wall.
All under 18’s, except 16 & 17 year olds who are competent climbers, must be supervised on the wall by a Full member who takes responsibility for their safety, behaviour and instruction. Alternatively they could join one of our taught sessions under the supervision of one of our qualified instructors. Youth climbing sessions.
There are two ways that a under 18 can be signed in by a full member:
They can be signed in as a guest using our normal signing-in procedures. See Guests & Visitors tab for more information.
NB If the member signing in the under 18 is not their parent or legal guardian then they must make sure that their parent or legal guardian has given permission for them to climb and has been fully made aware of the dangers involved. It is recommended they are shown the conditions of use & rules and the relevant sections of the Guest signing-in form. This option incurs no extra charge but new form must be completed on each visit.
They can become a Junior Supervised Member. This allows their parents to nominate up to 4 full members who can supervise their children whilst climbing. To do this the parent or legal guardian will need to read the parental and supervising members notes and the conditions of use & rules then read, fill in & sign in the relevant sections of the Under 18 Registration form
The nominated supervising full members will also need to read the parental and supervising members notes and then fill in the relevant sections of the Under 18 Registration form. The completed form should be presented to the reception on arrival at the wall, no need to book just turn up. (See box on right above for fees & opening times) There is a one-off £5 administration fee for this membership. The Junior supervised member will then be issued with a membership card which will need to be presented at reception on each visit. NB they will only be allowed entry to the wall if one of the nominated Full members is present to supervise them.
16 & 17 year olds who are competent experienced climbers can become Unsupervised Youth Members of the wall. They should be able to satisfactorily demonstrate the basic skills needed to climb safely:
Putting on a harness
Tying in to the rope using a recognised climbing knot
Belaying another climber up and lowering them down safely
They should get their parent or legal guardian to read the Parental & supervising members notes. They and their parens should read the conditions of use & rules. Then they should fill in the Membership registration form and get their parent or legal guardian to read, fill in & sign in the relevant sections of the Under 18 Registration form They should then contact the centre and book a 16/17 year old membership assessment. As this is a more in-depth assessment that for adult membership we do not recommend turning up with out booking an assessment as we may not have the staff free to do it. When turning up for the assessment the completed forms should be brought with them and presented to the reception on arrival at the wall, with payment for the annual membership fee and members entrance fee. (See box on right above for fees & opening times)
They will then be asked to demonstrate the required safety skills and asked questions regarding the conditions of use, rules and youth membership. We are looking for them to consistently demonstrate the necessary skills safely using current best practice. Providing you demonstrate these skills satisfactorily they will be given unsupervised youth membership of the wall. This allows them full access to our climbing facilities but they will not be able to bring any guests in to the wall. NB the assessment will normally take 30-45 minutes and it is useful if they are accompanied by some one who is able to climb as they are demonstrating their belaying.
The standard assessment for 16 & 17 year old members is for top roped climbing only. Should the 16/17 year old member wish to lead climb as well then their parents will need to tick the relevant box on the Under 18 Registration form and they will need to be assessed lead climbing & lead belaying as well. This must be stated when booking the assessment .
