Food in Primary Schools
HC3S meets the Government's Nutritional standards which is a compulsory standard based on the types of food offered on the plate.
Fruit and Vegetables
We use a mixture of fresh, frozen and tinned fruit and vegetables in our production kitchens. Examples of which are:
- potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, apples, pears, bananas and grapes are all fresh produce
- peas, mixed vegetables and green beans are usually frozen
- sweetcorn and pineapple are tinned produce.
Local
Following trials in schools during 2010, Buffalo burgers manufactured in and from animals reared in Overton, near Basingstoke have proved popular and continue to be on the menu. They are lower in saturated fat and cholesterol than conventional beef and, also, Water Buffalo graze rather than rip the grass from the ground so they do not have to be moved around so often and are better for the land than conventional cattle.
Fish
Haddock or cod is always used and not the cheaper fish products made from 'white fish'. HC3S was re-approved by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) during the Summer 2010, for using products from a fishery that has been certified to their environmental standards for a well managed and sustainable fishery. Those products applicable to this are marked with the MSC logo on our menu leaflets.
Bread
Most of our bread, cakes and biscuits are homemade and this includes the pizza which has a handmade bread base topped with tomato coulis and then vegetarian cheese.
Additives
HC3S is extremely proud to be the first and only school meal caterer to be awarded the Hyperactive Children's Support Group Award for Excellence in School Catering. This award is for our primary school meals and to achieve it, we have followed the HACSG recommendations and with help of our suppliers, removed up to 70 additives from our products.
