Celebrate 25 years of Black History Month
This month is Black History Month, which has now been celebrated in the UK every year for 25 years. Throughout the month there are opportunities to learn more about black history and culture – and there’s lots of fun for families too! Here are a few of the events on offer:
Global Rhythms Festival: Free family event on Sunday 14 October
Visit Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley between 12 noon and 4pm on Sunday 14 October, and you can enjoy a fun-packed afternoon of performances, workshops and world food. The event features music and dance from around the globe, and celebrates a whole range of different cultures.
From marimbas to belly dancing, and from steel pans to henna artists, there’s something fun for everyone! Visit Art Asia for more information. If wet, the event will take place in doors – so do come along.
Call Mr Robeson - A life, with songs: Performance on Thursday 25 October
Visit Ashcroft Arts Centre in Fareham at 7.30pm on Thursday 25 October to find out more about the life of Paul Robeson, famous singer and passionate civil rights campaigner.
Featuring some of his songs, this rollercoaster journey through Paul Robeson’s remarkable life highlights how his activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. Tickets cost £12.50 or £11.50 – contact Ashcroft Arts Centre to book.
Black History Month 25th anniversary event: Saturday 20 October
North Hampshire Carribean and African Network (NHCAN) is holding a special evening event at Popley Fields Community Centre, Basingstoke on Saturday 20 October from 6pm to 11pm. There will be music, a quiz, a raffle and lots of other entertainment. For further details visit the NHCAN website.
