Eddystone Light

Lithophane, porcelain, unglazed, showing the Eddystone Light in a storm with a fishing boat in the foreground taking in sail and two larger ships running before the gale; incised pattern number 50 on back, made at the Meissen factory, Saxony, Germany, c1840.

Pattern number 50 is described in Meissen’s price list simply as ‘Seesturm’ or ‘Storm at sea’.

Shown is the lighthouse designed by John Smeaton, which stood 13 miles out to sea from 1759 until 1882 and was then re-erected on Plymouth Hoe.
