Teapot made at the Grayshott Pottery 1998
A teapot designed by Janice Tchalenko (b.1942) and made at the Grayshott Pottery in Surrey in 1998. Tchalenko began as a studio potter in the tradition of Bernard Leach (1897-1979), with an amalgam of influences from the far-east and medieval England. But from the 1970s onwards she has exploited other sources – notably the colourful cultures of Russia and Iran, the painter Matisse and contemporary textiles. This work has helped to change the direction of studio pottery. However, her influence is most widely seen in design work like this, for large-scale production in commercial potteries.
