Sure Start Maternity Grant
What is it?
If families are living on a low income and faced with costs they are unable to meet they may be able to receive funding from the Social Fund.
Must be in receipt of other benefits: Income Support, Income based Job Seeker's Allowance or Tax Credits at the higher rates.
Must claim from 11 weeks before the week your baby is due until 3 months after the baby is born.
How much?
One off payment of £500 as at 2011/12 for one child in the family

Healthy Start Scheme
What is it?
Parents may be entitled to free milk, fresh fruit and vegetables, infant formula and vitamins*.
Women may qualify if they have at least one child under four years old and on benefits, or if they are under 18 and pregnant.
Must be in receipt of other benefits: Income Support, Income based Job Seeker's Allowance or Tax Credits at the higher rates.
Annual income must be £16,190 or less as at 2011/12.
How much?
Healthy Start vouchers are worth as at 2011/12:
£3.10 a week if you are pregnant.
£6.20 a week for each baby aged under one.
£3.10 a week for each child aged over one and under four.
How to apply?
Ask your midwife or health visitor or speak to your local Children's Centre.

* To obtain vitamins parents need to speak to their health professional first and use the letter that accompanies the vouchers to request vitamins.
