Early help for children, young people and families

Hampshire Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)

Mental health isn’t as scary as it sounds. In the same way we can get physically sick with a cold or the flu, sometimes we get mentally unwell too.

  • 1 in 4 of us will have emotional well-being, behavioural or mental health difficulties at some time in our lives.

  • Most schools have quite a few children and young people who are seen by the Hampshire Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

  • If you are worried about how a child or young person is feeling (or you are a child or young person) you can talk to your doctor, teacher, school nurse or counsellor. Or you can talk to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service directly by contacting your local service.

  • The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service in Hampshire is provided by the National Health Service (NHS), by an organisation called Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Children/young people and families

The thought of coming to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service may be scary for you. This is normal, but before you even visit we will be in contact with you to explain who we are and how we think we will be able to help.

More information about the service and how we help is available from the Turn your frown upsidedown website, including stories from other children and young people we have supported.

Referral criteria

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service has referral criteria. These criteria highlight when a child or young person may appropriately be seen by the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. Most children and young people do not need to access a mental health service to support their emotional wellbeing and mental health. However, there are times when children and young people may need the additional support of a specialist mental health service. At these times CAMHS will be there to provide support and offer advice and guidance.

You do not need to go to your Doctor to make a referral to the service.  Referrals can be made by anyone, including the child or young person, parent or carer. We do however ask that you have the relevant permissions before making a referral.

In addition to the referral criteria, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service has developed some guidance for professionals, to help them when they are concerned about the mental health of a child or young person.

The referral guidance provides information

  • on common concerns, including behavioural difficulties, bereavement, eating disorders and self-harm.

  • on helpful resources and local services which may be able to help.

The guidance has been developed by local clinicians within Hampshire. There is a different set of guidance for each area.

Consultation line for professionals

In addition to the referral guidance, if you are concerned about the mental health of a child or young person, or you wish to discuss general issues in relation to children’s mental health, you can contact the professionals’ consultation line.

The consultation line is available daily and you will be able to speak to a suitably qualified clinician about your concerns.  They will be able to offer advice and guidance.
