What is the UK Youth Parliament?

The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) enables young people to use their energy and passion to change the world for the better. Run by young people for young people, UKYP gives 11-18 year olds a voice, which is heard and listened to by local and national government, providers of services for young people and other agencies who have an interest in the views and needs of young people.

How does the UKYP work in Hampshire?

Hampshire County Council has six allocated places on the Youth Parliament. Each member is supported by a deputy member, which is elected on an annual basis by their peers. Members start their term in office in February and spend the year campaigning on youth issues and representing the views of their constituents.

How can young people get involved?

There are three ways to get involved:

  1. support the MYP and their deputy by taking part in consultations and sending them your views;
  2. vote for your MYP and their deputy in the annual elections (November);
  3. stand for election; nominations are open between September and October.

How can practitioners help?

  1. encourage young people to get involved;
  2. support the local MYP in carrying out their role;
  3. enable young people to vote, for example by hosting a polling station.
