What is the UK Youth Parliament?

The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) enables young people to use their energy and passion to change the world for the better. Run by young people for young people, UKYP gives 11-18 year olds a voice which is heard and listened to by local and national government, providers of services for young people and other agencies who have an interest in the views and needs of young people.

How does UKYP work in Hampshire?

Four seats were available in Hampshire for the 2013 elections with 23 young people coming forward to contest the seats. A total of 4760 votes were cast. Young people voting had the opportunity to pick a representative for their area that would be able to take their views and issues to a national stage as well as meet with local MPs and County Councillors to discuss youth issues in their local areas. The candidate with the highest number of votes in their geographical area became the MYP (Member of Youth Parliament) and those that had the second highest amount of votes in their geographical area became the DMYP (Deputy Member of Youth Parliament).

Now the MYP’s are in post, they will work on campaigns both locally and nationally and will take part in a debate with other MYPs from around the country in the House of Commons later in the year. Their term of office will run until the 25 March 2015

The role of an MYP requires commitment both in time and effort and their duties include attending:

  • Regional meetings of the UKYP
  • Meetings with decision makers of Hampshire County Council

How can practitioners help?

  • encourage young people to get involved
  • support the local MYP in carrying out their role
  • enable young people to vote, for example by hosting a polling station.
