In September 2009, some 800 laptops were issued to children living with foster carers as part of a scheme funded by BECTA to support Home Access to Targeted Groups. This funding has ended and BECTA is no longer in existence following the cuts to government departments.

Dongle Internet Access

When issued, Dongles came with two years of internet access via this route. This means that access for most will have run out around now, depending when the laptop was created. There are no plans to renew this access as no further grant funding is available. You will need to call 0871 2920150 if you want help to unlock the laptop to be able to connect it to your own internet provision.

Home Internet Access

If you have any questions or problems with regard to providing internet access at home, please raise the issue directly with your family placement social worker (not the support line!).

Virus Shield

The virus shield (Net Intelligence) on the laptops is valid until August or September 2012, depending on when the laptop was created. Where laptops are not automatically updating their virus shield foster carers can access the laptop support line and request assistance. This support contract is only available until August 2012 so we encourage you to take advantage of it until that time.
