Havant Borough Child Contact Centres
A Child Contact Centre is a neutral meeting place where children can meet up with the parent they no longer live with
We offer a safe, friendly, welcoming and unthreatening environment with supported (but not supervised) contact.
We have toys, games and refreshments for the children and their parents to share. For very young children we ask the parents to bring their own baby milk and nappies.
The contact session is for the enjoyment of the child or children and the parent they no longer live with, but there are always volunteers on hand to answer any queries and ease the way if necessary.
We have two contact centres (one in Waterlooville and one in Havant) and they fulfil a vital need in supporting children develop successful relationships, which will help them to go forward to a happy, healthy, secure and enriched life.

Havant Portage Service

Portage is a home visiting educational service for pre-school children with additional needs. The criteria to receive Portage is either that a child is born with a known syndrome, or the child is significantly delayed in two areas of development by a third of their chronological age.
Portage takes place in the child’s own home and relies on the principle of empowering parents as teachers of their children, to equip them with the skills and confidence they need to help their child, no matter what their child’s difficulties. Portage offers practical help and ideas to encourage a child's interests and make learning fun. The emphasis is on the positive, finding out and building on what a child can do. Activities are broken down into small steps by learning through play, with targets set every six months.
Portage takes its name from a town in Wisconsin, USA, where the service was first introduced in the early 1970s. The scheme was developed to meet the needs of the young children living in this rural area, where parents would have found it difficult to get to a centre-based service. Instead, the idea was to take the service to the families.
Since its introduction into the UK in 1976 there are now over 140 services registered with the National Portage Association. Portage is also international.
Portage is multi-disciplinary, working regularly with Educational Psychologists, Paediatricians, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists and Health Visitors, making joint visits in the child’s home.
As well as delivering ‘core’ Portage, we also deliver Portage Plus which is available to a child who has significant behaviour difficulties. This support extends to the early years setting that the child attends. The criteria for this service is that the child is presenting with challenging behaviour, over and above that expected for a child of his/her developmental age, or that the child is at risk to themselves or others at home or in their early years setting.
Portage ceases when the child enters school, be it special or mainstream, having completed the transition and enabling the child to settle into school as effortlessly as possible.
We also deliver training to nurseries and early years settings and monitor Portage children attending settings. The Portage team regularly attend courses, improving their own personal and professional development.
Referrals to our service are usually received from professionals involved with a child, although parents, grandparents and carers can also self-refer.

Home-Start Havant offers support, friendship and practical help to parents with young children living in the Havant Borough. We recruit and train volunteers who have parenting experience to visit families at home who have at least one child under five and offer support, friendship and practical assistance. Support groups are also available where parents can meet and chat with other parents.
What will the volunteer actually do?
Your volunteer will visit you each week for two hours to offer informal support and practical help. They will do whatever you would find most helpful, whether that's help with shopping, appointments, trips to the park, library, parent and toddler groups – or they can stay at home and spend time with you and the children – like a good friend would.
If you would like to know more about our support or would like to volunteer , please do not hesitate to call or email or have a look at our website.
