Hampshire Portage is an educational service for pre-school children with additional support needs and their families. The Portage model supports parents to build on their child’s successes and to use small steps to help their child achieve new skills.
Portage home visitors are experienced early years practitioners who have experience in understanding, recognising and developing the individual needs of the child. The service supports children with significant developmental delay and behavioural difficulties.
Hampshire Portage Service works in partnership with parents, carers and other professionals such as therapists, health visitors, paediatric consultants, educational psychologists and early years settings. This helps to ensure that everyone works towards shared common goals.
The family receive regular home visits during which activities are planned to enable the child to learn through play and having fun. Support often extends to the early years setting the child attends. Outreach support is also available for those children who meet the Portage criteria.
Portage can also be involved to ensure a successful transition to pre-school or school depending on their age.
