Wessex Prevention Services
It is widely recognised that one of the most effective ways to reduce youth crime is to prevent young people getting in to trouble in the first place. Research shows that early intervention is crucial and that if a young person has not offended by the age of 14, then they are unlikely to offend in future.
In Wessex we have developed a range of provisions in partnership with The YJB, The Children’s Fund, Community Safety Partnerships, voluntary organisations and the Police. Across the area we provide a multi-agency approach aimed towards meeting the needs of young people and their families. We do this by providing one to one support and activities to help young people and their parents make positive changes in their lives. Young people and their families volunteer to take part in these programmes. The following summarises the provision in our four areas with web links for further information.

Hampshire
Hampshire has eleven district council areas and we have successfully set up 11 YISP teams to cover the whole of the county with funding coming from YJB, Children’s Fund and Community Safety Partnerships. We have developed a Parenting Support Team who work with the parents of the children on YISP, using the new Triple P Programme, in partnership with the County Parenting Development Team, www3.hants.gov.uk/children's-services/families/parentdevelopment.

Arts have been and integral part of the preventative programmes since the beginning of 2007 with the appointment of the Youth Arts Co-ordinator and with additional funding from the Police for 2008 we have been able to appoint a dedicated Arts practitioner to work with the YISPs in Hampshire. The Get Active Project is also closely linked to prevention projects. For further information see the arts and sports pages.
