Wessex Youth Offending Team

Our Work with Young Offenders

Our team is made up of Police Officers, Social Workers, Probation Workers, Health Workers, Education Staff,  Sports Workers, Connexions Personal Advisors,  Parenting Workers and Substance Misuse Workers.

More specifically, the YOT

  • acts as appropriate adults for children and young people held at the police station;
  • assesses and provides interventions for children and young people subject to a final warning, administered by the police;
  • provides support for young people on bail;
  • prepares reports and other information for courts and criminal proceedings using information from families and schools;
  • provides a person who will support and supervise children and young people made the subject of orders, by the court;
  • works with parents to help them to develop better parenting skills;
  • offers victims of crime the opportunity to meet the young offender and thereby help the young person to understand the impact that their offending behaviour has.

Over 230 staff and 250 volunteers currently work for the Wessex YOT.  Staff are organised into 7 area-based operational teams, covering Southampton City, Portsmouth City, North West Hants, North East Hants, South West Hants, South East Hants and the Isle of Wight.
