Langstone
- Wadeway investigation
Lead Organisation: Chichester Harbour Conservancy
Work completed: 2006
Contribution from Coastal Capital Budget: £1000
The Wadeway between Langstone and Hayling Island is an archaeological feature of potentially national importance. An initial survey by Maritime Archaeology Ltd in 2005 outlined recommendations for excavating a trench in the Wadeway to assess its structure and date of construction. The funding from Hampshire County Council enabled a team from Maritime Archaeology Ltd to brave the elements and to dig a trench in the Wadeway to examine its structure and collect dateable samples. The report in March 2006 recommended scientific analysis to date the structure. The “dig diary” by the team excavating the Wadeway gives a fascinating insight into an archaeologist’s experience in the field. Samples are currently being analysed and a final comprehensive report on the archaeology of the Wadeway will be produced.
