People

  • Hampshire has a population of 1.28 million
  • In terms of population, Hampshire is the third largest shire county in England, behind Kent and Essex.
  • The south east region (excluding London) has a population of 8.3 million. This means that Hampshire accounts for 15.4% of this figure.
  • Hampshire has 525,000 households (latest government statistics 2006)
  • Hampshire County Council employs more than 40,000 staff in a range of full- and part-time positions.
  • The County Council has 78 councillors: 51 are Conservative, 25 are Liberal Democrats, the Labour party has one seat and The Community Campaign (Hart) one seat.
  • The County Council employs around 10,000 teachers.
  • The County Council helps around 6,000 Children & Family clients at any point in time.

Money

  • The Hampshire economy (excluding Portsmouth and Southampton) is worth approximately £23.5 billion, making it the second largest shire county economy after Surrey.
  • This year 2010/2011 Hampshire County Council plans to spend just under £200 million in its capital programme of major repairs and improvements to schools, roads and other council buildings.
  • The County Council's budgeted gross revenue spending in 2010 - 2011 will amount to over £1.8 billion.
  • The County Treasurer's Department administers the Hampshire Pension Fund for over 200 contributing employers in the Hampshire county area including Hampshire's district councils and unitary authorities, Hampshire's Police, Fire and Rescue authorities and certain universities and colleges that were formerly part of the County Council. It  arranges the payment of pensions to over 29,000 pensioners.

Children's services

  • There are 535 schools in Hampshire (excluding Portsmouth and Southampton).
  • The County Council teaches around 168,000 pupils.
  • One in every 44 children educated in England is taught in Hampshire.
  • The County Council employs just under 10,000 teachers.
  • The County Council helps around 6,000 children and family clients at any point in time.

Adult services

  • Information, advice, services and support to over 95,000 Hampshire residents per annum.
  • 22,000 people with critical and substantial needs receive fully care managed services
  • 4,000 people receive intermediate care.
  • In order to support people to remain in their own homes, we provide equipment to over 33,000 people.
  • Occupational therapy services provided to 5,500 people
  • We support 2,400 adults with learning disabilities.
  • We provide support and services to over 1,000 people with visual and/or hearing impairment.
  • In some cases, people will receive a range of the services detailed above and in many cases, we also provide support and advice to their carers.
  • Due to joint team work under Section 31 between the Adult Services Department, Children's Services and Health, a high proportion of people with mental health problems - 13,000 - use our services.
  • The County Council runs social care services from a range of locations around the county, including residential homes, day centres, community mental health teams, hospitals and resource units.
  • We run 10 nursing homes in partnership with Health.
  • To complement our own in-house resources, we contract with the private and voluntary sector both for residential care and services which support people to remain in their own homes.

Environment

  • Hampshire has more than 5,000 miles (8,600 kilometres) of road, the equivalent of driving from Southampton to Glasgow and back six times.
  • Over £58 million was spent maintaining Hampshire's highways and pavements during the financial year 2009/10
  • Hampshire County Council is responsible for 1,400 road bridges and 450 foot bridges
  • Hampshire has 193 miles (310 kilometres) of railway track, incorporating 49 stations

£1,000 of council tax payers money will pay for:

  • 43 square metres of carriageway to be patched, repairing potholes
  • 4,200 metres of continuous white lining to aid road safety
  • 160 gullies to be cleared to improve road surface drainage
  • 60 kilometres of grass verges to be trimmed and kept tidy
  • 6 new road signs to keep Hampshire moving
  • 774 miles of Hampshire roads to be salted when there is snow and freezing weather
  • 14.5 tonnes of household waste to be disposed.

Hampshire County Council is increasing its winter salt supply to 18,000 tonnes for 2010/11.

  • This is three times the amount recommended by the government
  • Enough for 18 days continuous salting of Priority One routes during bouts of snow and freezing weather   
  • Priority One routes carry 85% of traffic and include A roads, major bus routes, and roads to major emergency services and large schools
  • The number of grit bins around the county is set to treble to 6000 for 2010/11

Hampshire  has some of the best recycling and waste disposal facilities in Europe and provides a network of 24 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

  • Hampshire dealt with over 650,000 tonnes of household waste in 2009/10
  • 90% of Hampshire's  waste was diverted from landfill
  • 41% was recycled, and 49% was processed at one of the County's three energy recovery facilities.
  • The energy recovered from Hampshire's waste is sufficient to power 50,000 homes

In Hampshire there are 30 commercial bus operators providing around 310 bus services

  • Almost two thirds of the bus services (200) are subsidised by Hampshire County Council at a cost of £7million  per year

In Hampshire there are over 150,000 street lights and illuminated signs and bollards.

  • Over the next five years more than half the County's streetlights (87,000) are to be replaced and the remainder updated to be more energy efficient.
  • This work began in April 2010 under a 25 year, £225 million joint private finance initiative with Southampton City Council and West Sussex County Councils.

Services and resources

  • The County Council runs 50 libraries and three Discovery Centres across Hampshire, that received 6.7 million visits every year.
  • The County Council is responsible for 19 sites and museums, four arts centres, seven country parks and almost 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometres) of rights of way.
  • Hampshire Record Office in Winchester has eight miles of shelving.
  • No fewer than 136 double-decker buses could fit inside Milestones, Hampshire's living history museum.
  • The County Council conducted 3,648 marriages in 2009/10 and registered 6,818 births, 7676 deaths and conducted 1517 citizenship ceremonies
  • Hampshire Trading Standards advised just over 34,000 Consumers and Businesses in 2009/10.

Media

  • The most read local newspaper in Hampshire is The News followed by the Southern Daily Echo.
  • 34% of Hampshire residents prefer to receive information about the Council via free local newspapers, 23% via paid-for local, paid-for papers and 33% via the County Council's resident magazine Hampshire Now.
