Types of monitor
A monitor displays the information, video and graphics generated by the computer. Monitors are very similar to televisions but display information at a much higher quality.
A monitor is also referred to as a;
- video display
- video screen.
There are two main types of monitor
- CRT which look like traditional televisions and are very deep in size and
- LCD monitors which are much thinner while still offering the same, if not better, graphics.
LCD monitors are now much more popular than CRT ones due to their smaller size and lower price.
Most monitors range in size from 15" to 21" or more. This size is a diagonal measurement from one corner of the screen to the other.
Screen resolution refers to the sharpness, clarity and size of the pictures and text you can see on your monitor.
The higher the numbers of the screen resolution, the more text you will see on your screen, but the text will be smaller as shown in the examples below:
Change screen resolution
If you click on your Start button (bottom left hand corner) you should find a menu option where you can change your resolution. Alternatively, for most computers you can right click on your desktop and select the Properties option.
You may need to restart your computer for a new screen resolution to take effect.
