Performance Indicators

Performance measurement is an important tool in our mission to continuously improve our services. By measuring our performance we can ensure that we are focussed on our key objectives, address areas where performance falls below the high target levels that we strive to achieve, identify and share good practices and learn from other local authorities.
National performance indicators allow comparisons of the performance of local authorities on specific measures, which are required by government departments and agencies and examples include:
Social Services Performance Assessment Framework Indicators, required by the Commission for Social Care Inspection
Education Measures, required by the Department for Education and Skills.
Quality of Life Performance Indicators, supplied voluntarily by local authorities to the Audit Commission
Best Value Performance Indicators, collected by the Audit Commission who publish the annual figures nationally for comparison on their web pages
This group of pages sets out our results against the Best Value Performance Indicators (BVPIs) for 2007/08 along with targets for the next three years. We have published our results in two formats, as a table setting out all the results in one place and also by individual indicator, offering a fuller explanation of what this level of performance means and the trends this has produced over time. View the table, or view the pages down the left hand menu for more detailed explanations.
When looking at the BVPIs resulting from the satisfaction survey it is important to note that due to a methodology change, the results from one year to the next are not directly comparable. In 2003 the survey was carried out as face-to-face interviews, but in 2006 under guidance from the Audit Commission, this was changed to a postal survey and has led to a national overall reduction in satisfaction levels.
BVPI results from previous years including results of those indicators now deleted can be viewed on the Audit Commission web pages. If you have problems accessing any of these BVPI (Best Value Performance Indicators) and would like them in a different format, please contact the Policy Unit for assistance.
