Mal Phillips
Mal Phillips is a painter living in the New Forest who is inspired by land, sea, history & industry.
Mal who has almost retired from his industrial work for the fifth time, has paintings in private collections in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, Libya, Qatar, France, the USA and throughout the UK. He has exhibited paintings wherever he has lived or worked as an engineer, including London's Mall Galleries.
Mal´s projects have produced paintings ranging from a few centimetres to many metres in size, in a wide and unusual variety of media. His business cards for example are all hand painted and laminated. There must be thousands of these simple watercolour sketches out there.
Mal has developed a rapid working method. This has been used to produce hundreds of sketches offshore in the North Sea & the onshore oil fields of Abu Dhabi. There is not much time to sketch on a helicopter flight, or whilst being driven across rough desert tracks. Cameras are also not allowed in the oil fields, so you have to learn to draw very fast. This style has evolved and been shared over the years, with Mal continuing to work ´on the hoof´ in sometimes busy and occasionally precarious situations.
