Language in the Curriculum course (LinC)

This after-school language in the curriculum course has been running very successfully for the past couple of years in Basingstoke (BLinC). It was set up in 2008 to offer additional provision to advanced EAL learners from local secondary schools for students mainly in years 9 to 11. This was a joint decision between local schools, colleges, the Connexions service and EMTAS.

The course aims to create a fun and relaxed environment in which students do not feel inhibited to take part and where learning is enjoyable and stimulating.

LinC was rolled out beyond Basingstoke in 2010-11 in the Winchester, Eastleigh and Rushmoor area. This is continuing in 2011-12.

During 2009-10 more than 50 KS4 students participated. Students from Basingstoke schools met at BCOT once a week for 2 terms, and focused on improving their academic writing through scaffolded speaking and listening, modelling of key language and collaborative group work.

A teacher comment after Nepali speaking student predicted D for Science attended this course:

"[Student] has developed his writing skill.  Written coursework has consistently been a C grade…In written form the range of his language is increasing."

We have put together some information about the course ethos and content which includes sample lesson plans and good practice.

Audit of 14-19 EAL provision in Hampshire schools and colleges
