Access to Learning
Through this project, Hampshire EMTAS is able to offer parents an opportunity to assess needs and to find out about adult education courses run in their area. At the initial meeting (which is often on a one to one basis) the English Education system is explained, and videos showing literacy and numeracy hours may be shown. Parents are also encouraged to take part in school life, either on a one off, helping for a trip for example, or on a regular basis. Many ethnic minority parents are surprised to find out that they are, in fact, welcomed to come and help at school, whatever their level in English language.
Advice can also given on how parents can support their children with homework. Then the discussion moves on to assessing their own learning needs. Advice on how to obtain letters of equivalence for qualifications obtained abroad is available together with information on English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes run at local colleges, Family Learning initiatives and how to gain qualifications to work in childcare or school environment.
