Clubs and activities for ethnic minority children and young people

Heritage language classes

The aim of community language classes is for pupils to develop spoken and literacy skills in their heritage languages so that:

  • their self-esteem is raised
  • they can develop a strong sense of their whole identity
  • they are able to use their bilingual skills to learn, thus increasing their potential to achieve
  • the foundations are laid for them to sit public examinations in heritage languages.

A combination of traditional and modern teaching methods are used and pupils learn about their cultural heritage as well as having language lessons.

School-age children and their parents will be warmly welcomed - please contact us if you would like further information. Please telephone Helen on 01256 330195.

After school homework clubs

We run a number of homework clubs in schools and now many schools are doing the same.

Children can work on homework tasks with support from teachers and EMTAS staff. They have access to the school library and ICT facilities including the internet. When the children have finished their homework they can participate in a range of interesting activities, such as multilingual role-play and story-telling; playing educational games and producing materials in and about other languages and cultures.

Parents are also invited to attend with their children and there are opportunities for them to discuss educational issues.

Pupils and parents who are interested in joining these clubs are welcome to come along - please contact us if you would like further information. Please telephone Helen Thomas on 01256 330195.
