Hampshire Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS)

Good practice in Early Years settings

See our useful diagram on the range of strategies you can use to support EAL or Traveller pupils.

EAL resources

There are many resources which can aid schools in supporting bilingual and ethnic minority pupils. Our resources page in our main Schools section has a list of useful publications.

Traveller based resources

Our service has put together a Year R pack of books to support guided reading. Please also see our Traveller Resources section for details of this and further resources which can aid schools in supporting Traveller pupils.

Good practice from Project 32

Micheldever C of E Primary School

Working in partnership with our EMTAS Teacher Advisor the school has now implemented the following:

  • Traveller books representing culture in the library

  • the reception home corner has become a trailer

  • House and Homes became the focus for the autumn term to help children to see how they all live in different locations.

  • there is now a (Traveller) parent in school helping with the allotment and other parents are confident to chat at end of the day.
