How much do you know about your ethnic minority pupil - early years and KS1

  • Are you happy that you can pronounce his/her name accurately?

  • Which language(s) does s/he speak? How fluent is s/he?

  • Which country does s/he come from?

  • Are there any cultural/religious restrictions you need to be aware of? e.g. some cultures do not allow the drawing of living things, changing for PE separately etc

  • How long has s/he been in the UK?

  • Do they or their siblings have dual registration at any other school?

  • Does s/he speak any English at home?

  • Did s/he learn any English before coming to the UK?

  • Does s/he have any brothers or sisters?

  • What kind of school or pre-school experience has s/he had ( if any ) in UK or country of origin ?

  • What does s/he enjoy doing?

  • What pre-reading skills does s/he have in first language? eg talking about pictures, retelling stories, reading simple words

  • What number skills does s/he have in first language? eg. counting, colour recognition, use of mathematical language etc.

  • Can the child write name or numbers in first language?

  • Are you aware of any learning difficulties in first language (SEN, not acquisition of English)

  • Do you have a general idea of your ethnic minority child’s ability?

  • ·How does the child communicate with adults and peers in school?

  • How well do you feel your ethnic minority child has settled into the school    environment?

  • Have you been able to establish liaison with the parents?

  • Are there any medical problems that you need to be aware of?

  • Does s/he have any special dietary requirements?

  • Do you know the dates of any relevant festivals and do you have basic information about them? eg. family fasting days.
