Hampshire Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS)

Early Years training

Our Teacher Advisor for Travellers and our Bilingual Assistants Manager have been delivering Raising Awareness training for Early Years providers. The Services for Young Children advertised the training in Horizons magazine and sessions have been set up across Hampshire. The course aims to look at strategies to support EAL children and Travellers in a pre-school setting, share activities and resources that can be used.

This can be booked through your local 'Services for Young Children'.

Course evaluation

The courses have been very well-attended and all evaluations are positive. Participants were asked ‘how will the knowledge that you have gained from this course improve your setting?’

Comments included:

  • I know how to help with making a child feel more settled/comfortable when they start in our setting.

  • It has made me aware of the difficulties that children must have when they are entering a setting and to know how we can change things.

  • It has helped us settle ethnic minority children, make parents feel welcome and staff more confident.

  • It will improve relationships with parents sharing knowledge gained from today’s training, also for children and staff.

  • Hopefully it will encourage parents and children to feel welcomed and boost confidence when entering a setting

  • I have a Polish boy who does not speak any English; this course has helped me with some ideas to communicate with him better.

  • The knowledge I have gained from today’s session will be very useful to disseminate to the rest of the team.

  • I would recommend my colleagues attend future sessions.

  • We now have contacts numbers which will enable us to gain information we will need.

  • It has helped me become more aware of what I need to do if we have Traveller pupils.

  • We can support and encourage parents and children and relay information to staff.
