Hampshire Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS)

Training for teachers within Initial Teacher Training

Advice and support

We welcome enquiries from trainees with regard to supporting pupils from ethnic minority backgrounds, including those with EAL.  We are able to provide advice and information over the phone, and trainees are welcome to visit our resource base to borrow books, materials and artefacts.

Work shadowing

It is sometimes possible for trainees with a particular interest in EAL/EMA issues to shadow a member of our team.  This provides an opportunity for example, to learn more about planning and providing effective support, maximising the use of pupils’ heritage language at school, or assessing a pupil who is new to English.

Specialist input during school placements

We are able to visit schools to provide specialist input on EAL/EM issues, particularly in relation to meeting the QTS standards. This can be offered on a cluster or pyramid basis.

Specialist input at ITT Institutions

We are often asked to deliver specialist input as part of existing training programmes for example through lectures, seminars and workshops. We are able to support and guide trainees in their thinking about  EAL and EMA issues.

Please contact Sarah Coles our training manager to discuss any of the above or your institution’s particular training needs.
