Hampshire Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS)

Training for teachers

woman teacher smilingWe are able to offer a wide range of training opportunities for teachers, most of which are currently free to Hampshire LA schools. Training can take place at either of our bases ( Basingstoke or Havant) or at your school at a mutually convenient time.  The following opportunities offer a progression route for teachers as they develop further skills and expertise in EAL, which can lead towards a nationally recognised specialist qualification.

NEW WORKSHOPS/COURSES:

Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL)

TEAL is for all practising headteachers/teachers with responsibility for English as an additional language / specialist teachers within Ethnic Minority Achievement Services.

For further information see course details on Hampshire Teaching and Leadership College website.

Training for Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs)

We are able to support NQTs in a variety of ways.  We attend the annual Hampshire NQT conference in Winchester, where we are available to distribute resources, offer advice or deal with specific queries.

We are able to deliver training which addresses the QTS Standards in relation to EAL and Ethnic Minority Achievement (EMA). We can also provide new teachers with a local profile of ethnic minority pupils and communities in Hampshire, for example which ethnic groups are currently at greatest risk of underachieving, languages spoken, sources of support.  We are happy to offer this at a county or school level.

From time to time, it may also be possible for an NQT to shadow a member of our staff in order to observe support strategies and aspects of good practice in more detail.

Bilingual New Arrival Conferencing (BiNAC)

This is a practical workshop style session focussing on support strategies teachers can use in order to help a pupil new to English to access the language of the curriculum. See New Arrivals Training.

‘Marking Progress’ – assessing the language skills of pupils with EAL

Hampshire EMTAS has been part of a team of specialist who have developed this training package for the DCSF.   It is currently being produced and published by the QCA and will be available soon for Hampshire schools.

Training through the Primary National Strategy and Key Stage 3 Strategy

Primary National Strategy

There are currently 15 LEAs who are taking part in a national pilot to investigate effective ways of embedding good EAL practice in schools.  We are monitoring the outcomes of these pilots carefully in order to build on best practice and develop effective ways of working / dissemination in Hampshire.

We are currently involved in some joint work with PNS Consultants in specific schools so that expertise can be shared.  We are also able to offer more intensive support and training to schools wishing to further develop good EAL practice in the context of the PNS.

Key Stage 3 Strategy

Other training

We are also able to offer training on a range of subjects related to EMA and EAL to meet your school’s particular needs, for example race equality, SEN/EAL, school self evaluation, cultural/language awareness and family learning.

If you would like to discuss your school’s particular needs, please do not hesitate to contact Anwen Foy.
