Elective Home Education
EMTAS commissioned a study to investigate the reasons why traveller families elect to 'home educate'.
The study was carried out by Dr Kalwant Bhopal of the University of Southampton and Martin Myers from the Open University.
'Whilst some families are very successfully managing the education of their children, others are struggling. More research is necessary to identify the quality and scope of education children are receiving. Reflecting national trends most Gypsy and Traveller families in Hampshire recognise the value of the school curriculum; the reasons for withdrawing their children from a school education often has less to do with not wanting their children to receive an education and far more to do with concerns about the school institution itself.'
An addtional report was compiled by Hampshire EMTAS to complement the first study and includes results of the interviews mentioned in the study.
