NQT Induction
Golden Hellos
Some NQTs are eligible to claim a Golden Hello once they have completed the Induction Year. You may make a claim if:
- you are a secondary teacher of a shortage subject - Maths, Science, DT, English (including drama and dance), ICT, MFL, and, if you began your PGCE training from August 2006 onwards, RE and Music. Primary teachers are not eligible
- your course comprised at last 50% of the indicated subject - not if you trained to teach joint subject areas where no subject comprised at least 50% of the course
- you trained to teach at least KS3 and/or KS4
- you did a postgraduate qualification in England - not a Bachelor teaching degree or other undergraduate route. (Teachers who undertook equivalent postgraduate courses in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland or the EU may also be eligible - see ·http://www.tda.gov.uk/goldenhellos for more information on eligibility)
- you did a postgraduate qualification via a college-based route - not GTP or OTT
- following your NQT Induction year, you are contracted to be employed on a permanent or fixed-term contract for at least one term to teach the indicated subject for more than 50% of your teaching time; and continue to be so employed until receipt of the Golden Hello. This contract must be at a maintained secondary school or a maintained or non-maintained special school - i.e. you may not claim if your contract is at a 6th Form or FE college or if you are employed by a private agency - your contract must be with a school or a Local Authority.
- you are employed as in the point above, and make your claim, within 12 months of completing Induction (extendable to 24 months in cases of pregnancy, full-time caring responsibilities or if medically unfit to work as a teacher)
If you are eligible, the claim form will have been given to you by your training college. When you finish your training, your college tutor will have signed it to confirm that you have completed the course. At the end of your Induction Year, your Headteacher will sign it and you can then submit the application once it has been confirmed to you by the Local Authority that you have successfully completed Induction. Please remember that while the school recommends an Induction 'pass' this has to be ratified by the LA and then again by the GTCE - and you may not submit your application until after the end of your final Induction term and when you have confirmation of your new post after Induction.
Send the completed claim form to: Karen Smith, External Funding Team, Children's Services Dept, Hampshire County Council, The Castle, Winchester SO23 8UG. Forms sent to any other address will be returned to you.
Payment will not be processed before External Funding has been informed by Hampshire Education Personnel Services that you have successfully completed Induction and that we believe you are eligible to claim the Golden Hello. We send External Funding a spreadsheet after the end of each term, listing these NQTs - there is no advantage to you in sending in your claim form before the end of term as it will not be processed any earlier.
If you have lost your form, request a replacement from your training college - these cannot be supplied by either your school or the Local Authority and must be signed by your college tutor.
