Post 16 Education

Within Hampshire, the great majority of learners within the 14-16 age range attend the County Council's 71 secondary schools.

Post 16 Learners have a choice of different types of institution providing education and training, eg Further Education and Sixth Form Colleges and work-based learning providers.

  • There are 28,500 16-19 year old students in Hampshire.
  • Just over 85% of learners remain in education or training beyond 16 (slightly above the national figure) and the majority receive their post-16 education in colleges and work-based learning.
  • Just under 1600 in maintained school sixth forms.
  • You can choose from Further Education (FE) sixth form

    colleges, Hampshire schools with sixth forms and specialist colleges for young people with LDD (Learning Difficulty and Disability ). A further five colleges and 1 school sixth form are established in Southampton and Portsmouth.
  • In addition, a range of training providers and colleges deliver apprenticeships and/or Entry to Employment (e2e) programmes for young people not in education, training or employment.

Colleges are independent of the Local Education Authority (LEA). The LLSC (Local Learning and Skills Council) has statutory responsibility for the planning and funding of post-16 education and training, and also the lead role in conducting the strategic area review of 14-19 education and training, working closely with the LEA and other stakeholders.
