Schools will address four health-related themed areas using a whole-school approach:
- personal, social and health education (including sex and relationship education and drugs education)
- healthy eating
- physical activity
- emotional health and well-being (EHWB) (including anti-bullying policy and practice).
Once validated, a school may choose to develop additional areas:
In all themed areas, there are five 'strands' or key principles which must be addressed by the school:
- policy
- must link to health and safety
- should clearly indicate who has responsibility for the monitoring and review of safety issues within the school
- should involve whole school community
- planning in the curriculum
- should consider a wide perspective on safety, including safer travel to school, 'Safe in the sun' and risk assessment
- practice (the delivery of health education in the school)
- where possible, this should be made real and relevant to the lives of ...
- should focus on the development of skills such as first aid and, in particular, risk assessment
- personal skills
- working with others, problem solving, communication
- personal challenge and responsibility
- the focus of this work is to provide young people with the opportunity to develop their practical skills. Examples of this may include cycling proficiency, traffic issues, recognising and dealing with environmental hazards, personal safety education and pupil-led health and safety audits.
